Erg Playlists

Music to erg to, pt. 21

First playlist of the new year! Whether you’re heading off on a training trip or getting ready to start training for the spring season at home, here’s hoping all the meters you’re putting in now prove to be worth it in just a few short months. As you’re doing your workouts and as we enter the thick of the winter training season, make sure you’re keeping the purpose/goal of the workout in mind, stretching before and after practice, recovering properly, eating the right foods, getting an adequate amount of sleep, and ultimately keeping your eye on the prize.

Bassnectar’s remix of Nina Simone’s “Feelin’ Good” was featured on an episode of Hard Knocks back in August when they were following the Bengals around training camp and … seriously, whoever chose that song did a good job. It was perfect. The song alone is incredible but the remix gives it just that tiny bit of edge that makes it good to workout to.

This week’s playlist starts off pretty mellow (perfect for a warmup) before getting into Paul McCartney’s song “Live and Let Die” which, seriously, if you don’t like just leave. The song itself is amazing but it’s the guitar that does it for me every time. Beyonce’s “Countdown” seems like a good addition because who wouldn’t want a power 10 from Beyonce?

Most of this week’s playlist comes from when I popped into CRI right before I moved. There were a couple of the high-performance guys erging and while I was waiting for someone I was sitting there Shazaam-ing all the songs for the better part of 45 minutes.

Raise your hand if you started winter training this week. Most teams are probably off the water now and, if you’re a collegiate team, are transitioning into their routine of weightlifting, rowing in the tanks, and everyone’s all-time ultimate-favorite thing ever … putting in several thousand meters a week (or day!) on the erg. Spring will be here before we know it…

This isn’t so much an erg playlist this week as it is a travel playlist. Princeton Chase, Head of the Schuylkill, Head of the Fish, etc. are all this weekend so if you’re lucky enough to be stuck on a bus for a few hours, make sure you’ve got the appropriate soundtrack to drown out everything else that’s happening around you. If you’re at the Chase, I’ll see you there.

If you’re looking for a solid song to listen to while you’re erging, “Smoke on the Water” is it. Such a classic song, not to mention a perfect description of those foggy morning rows. It’s a “must-have” for any erg playlist. M83’s “Midnight City” is one of those songs that you would swear is in every rowing video on YouTube ever so it seemed like an obvious choice for a playlist. The other “must-haves” on here are U2’s “Vertigo”, The Black Keys’ “Gold on the Ceiling”, and Def Leppard’s “Pour Some Sugar on Me”. You haven’t experienced a real erg test until you’ve been in a boathouse with guitar-heavy music blasting at full volume with the whirr of the ergs in the background. The PR potential in conditions like that are high.
