Erg Playlists

Music to erg to, pt. 12

If you’re looking for a solid song to listen to while you’re erging, “Smoke on the Water” is it. Such a classic song, not to mention a perfect description of those foggy morning rows. It’s a “must-have” for any erg playlist. M83’s “Midnight City” is one of those songs that you would swear is in every rowing video on YouTube ever so it seemed like an obvious choice for a playlist. The other “must-haves” on here are U2’s “Vertigo”, The Black Keys’ “Gold on the Ceiling”, and Def Leppard’s “Pour Some Sugar on Me”. You haven’t experienced a real erg test until you’ve been in a boathouse with guitar-heavy music blasting at full volume with the whirr of the ergs in the background. The PR potential in conditions like that are high.

I think this is one of my favorite playlists so far. I’m a huge fan of the Judas remix and was pleasantly surprised to hear it being played at the boathouse the other day when people were doing their workouts. Clement Marfo’s “Champion” should be on everybody’s playlist because it’s just good. I can definitely see this one getting a lot of air time in the spring when we start doing 2ks.

When I was a freshman in college, people started making a lot of Syracuse Basketball montage videos with “Remember the Name” as the background music. That song was everywhere and was constantly being played in the Dome, at Manley Field House, and practically anywhere else that athletes would congregate. I remember it being played a lot in the erg room so it’s always been one of my favorite songs to work out to.

“This is ten percent luck, twenty percent skill, fifteen percent concentrated power of will. Five percent pleasure, fifty percent pain, and a hundred percent reason to remember the name.”

In addition to being accompanied by one of the most badass sequences of cinematography like, ever, Trent Reznor and Atticus Ross’s version of “In the Hall of the Mountain King” practically made that Henley scene from The Social Network. Not bad considering the song was originally composed in 1876.

Lots of good steady state songs this week, especially the Bassnectar remix of “Lights”, “Doom & Gloom” by the Stones, and the Benny Benassi remix of “Shake It Out” by Florence and the Machine. If you’re a football fan you’ll like Joan Jett’s song “I Hate Myself For Loving You”. Hopefully I’m not the only one that didn’t know until a few years ago that that was the SNF song…

Young the Giant’s song “My Body” is a great song because not only is the tempo, rhythm, and intensity perfect for erging but the chorus has a line that practically defines rowers (and most other athletes) to a tee: “My body tells me no but I won’t quit ’cause I want more…”.
