Question of the Day

Out of curiosity – why do lightweights stress and stress about getting so far under the minimum? It makes sense that they would want to have a bit of a cushion to ensure they don’t go over it (e.g., being at 130-132 so that if they eat or drink too much, they’re still under 135), but I don’t understand from a logical perspective why they get so worked up about getting their weight down and down and down. Yes, getting down to weight is extremely mentally and emotionally taxing but why do coaches want such drastic margins between the weight maximum and what they actually weigh? It seems to me that you would want to be as close to the maximum as possible, because the heavier you are, the more powerful your stroke can be, theoretically speaking, no? So you would want to be as big as possible without surpassing the maximum to be better competition. I.E. A 160lb guy can probably pull harder than a 150lb guy, if you’re making that judgment solely based on weight. Right? So what gives with the constant weight loss — other than it being emotionally addictive and unhealthy?

I get what you’re asking and what you’re saying but be careful about phrasing it so … harshly. You sound kind of flippant here and I know several lightweights that would raise an eyebrow at this. It’s a physical thing yes, but for some rowers, more than most people realize, it’s much more of a psychological thing. When people are dismissive about it or talk about it like they’re being illogical or something, it can be pretty damaging.

There is no minimum for lightweights – not sure if you meant to put “maximum” in your first sentence or not but only coxswains have minimums. Minimums mean that you cannot be under that weight; maximums mean you can’t be over it. Lightweight women and men have a maximum of 130lbs or 160lbs, respectively.

I don’t think most coaches do want drastic margins between the rowers’ weights and the maximums. If the maximum is 130lbs a coach isn’t going to tell all the women in the boat that they need to weigh 120lbs on race day. A few days beforehand they might want to be 128lbs to provide that cushion, like you said, but I don’t think two pounds constitutes a “drastic margin”.

Theoretically yes, I suppose the heavier you are the more brute strength you’ll be able to conjure up but lightweight rowing isn’t all about strength like heavyweight rowing is. OK, technically that’s not completely true. Heavyweight rowing requires good technique, obviously, but since they don’t have weight limits they can be as heavy as they want (within reason, use your common sense) which means they can out-muscle the competition. Lightweights, however, do have weight limits which means their brute strength can only take them so far. Their technical rowing has to be spot on in order to make up for what they lack in strength (compared to heavyweights).

Other than all of that … I don’t know how else to answer your question. I think that most people that compete at the lightweight level are already within a healthy weight range so they don’t need to do much other than maintain their current weight. Others have to do more but if they’re responsible in the off-season they won’t have much weight to lose when racing season rolls around.

Hey so following that junior girl, I’m going into junior year as well, I’m 5’9″ and on the lower side of lightweight. I pull an 8:00 2k, and I know that’s not low enough but do you think I may have a chance at recruitment? There’s only so many lightweight options and I’m not at that level, so I need a compromise. Tips for really getting that time down in the next year?

D1 programs tend to look for 2ks around 7:40-7:45ish as a starting point. As a junior, you’ve definitely got time to shave some seconds off your current 2k, it’s just going to be a matter of putting in the meters to get it done – basically it comes down to steady state, steady state, and more steady state. Build up your strength and endurance too – try to incorporate some lifting into your routine over the summer, as well as some cardio (running, biking, or swimming are great options).

I’m not sure if this is a misconception or just something that people don’t know but you don’t have to be recruited to row on the team in college. You could just email the coach up and say “hey, I was accepted into the Class of 2017, I rowed for four years in high school, and I’m interested in walking on to the team.” If you’re not sure your times are good enough to be recruited or after talking to coaches you don’t get any offers, you should consider this route.

To be honest, if you’re on the low side of lightweight (I’m assuming around 115-120lbs?) you’ll probably get more requests to cox rather than row, even though you’re tall. Height isn’t as much a big deal for coxswains as weight is, so even though the majority of us are vertically challenged there have been known to be a few tall coxswains. Your height is great for a rower but being 20+ pounds lighter than the other openweights can make it hard for you to actually be competitive with them, which is probably what coaches will point out.

So I’ve been rowing for a year and a lot of people underestimate me because I’m young and short but I’ve been doing a lot better than people taller and those who’ve been there longer than me. The problem is the coaches look over me (I’m 5’5″) and automatically chose this girl for boats who’s a bit taller than me, even though my times are better and I’m a better rower. How do I get them to look at us equally?

Ask for a seat race. State your case as to why you think you deserve to be in whichever boat you’re going for and why you think you’re the best choice. What can you bring to the boat that will make it go fast? The key to getting your coach(es) to take you seriously is to talk yourself up instead of talking the other person down. Seat races, when done correctly, can be a really good indication as to who can move boats, so I think asking for one of them will be your best bet. Whatever the final decision though, you’ve got to respect it. Talk to your coaches one-on-one and and tell them that you feel like you’re progressing well with your rowing and really want to be considered as a contender for the top boats – what, in their opinion, should you work on so you can be considered for those lineups?

Assuming you’re only a freshman or sophomore, you are going to grow more (do as I say, not as I do – pretty sure I stopped growing in like, 8th grade). 5’5″ isn’t that short – the majority of junior women I know who row now, in addition to the girls I rowed with in high school, are all in the 5’5″ to 5’7″ range. Even if that is the reason your coaches aren’t boating you, don’t use it as a crutch. A rower’s height is only part of what makes them an efficient rower. Do everything you can to improve the other parts so that when your coaches look at you, they think about your technique, how coachable you are, what kind of teammate you are, etc. before the thought of your height even crosses their mind.

Next weekend is the last race of the season. I’ve been stroke all year, but for this last race I’m suddenly put in bow seat. I can row both sides that’s not an issue, I just sort of feel useless because I don’t have the same responsibilities anymore. I really want to ask my coach about it, but I don’t want to sound ungrateful or cocky. How should I approach this?

If you want to ask your coach about it just be straightforward and to the point. As long as you aren’t whiny or accusatory, there’s really no way that you can look bad. Just say that you’re curious why the lineup was changed for the last race, if this is indicative of something you need to work on, etc. and listen to what they have to say.

Related: Hey, as a coach you might be able to tell me, in a quad how do you decide who goes where? And the same for an eight? Where you’re placed in the boat, should this tell you anything about where you “sit” compared to the rest of the crew?

Without knowing your coach’s motives, here’s my take. As the stroke, you had one job – set and maintain the pace for the crew. Because strokes tend to spend so much time thinking about this their technique can start to falter, which is why sometimes coaches will throw them back in 6-seat for a practice or two to relieve them of the pressures of stroking and let them re-focus on their own rowing and technique. In bow seat your technique needs to be solid because you have a much more profound impact on the set because the boat is narrower there vs. in the middle of the boat or in the stern. So, if you’re moving from a position where you could theoretically get away with having okay technique to the spot in the boat that requires some of the best technique, that’s a sign that your coach is confident that you can contribute from any seat in the boat. I wouldn’t be too upset about that since that’s a good thing.

Plus, the whole point of the sport is that no one rower contributes more than another so regardless of what seat you’re in, you’re not useless just because you’re not the stroke.

Books on Rowing, pt. 1

A few weeks ago I was asked about “rowing books” and which ones were worth checking out. My coaches in high school made the point that in order to gain a real appreciation for the sport you’ve gotta spend time learning about its history, the people, etc., which was something that always stuck with me. Below are some books that I’ve enjoyed that all have a “historical” perspective to them, with the time periods of each ranging from the 1930s, through the 70s and 80s, up to as recent as 2007.

The Amateurs

“The Amateurs” is about four guys training for the Olympic trials in Princeton for the right to represent the US in the single at the 1984 Olympics in Los Angeles. It talks a lot about how rowing is a sport where you’re only famous amongst each other – there are no lucrative contracts or multi-million dollar endorsement deals and the only people who really know your name are your teammates, competitors, and coaches.

Another thing it talks about is “being the best”. If you’re going to the Olympics, obviously you’re one of the best but if you’re in the single, you are the best. There’s only one of you whereas those who aren’t selected will have to contend with rowing in the pair, four, or the quad and sharing the glory with someone else. In the single, the glory is all your own. Because of that, the book also delves into the psychology of the athletes and how their brand of motivation is much different than those of us in sweep boats.

The Last Amateurs

This one is about the 2007 Boat Race, specifically the time the author spent with the Cambridge team, studying and noting their every move for the duration of the year leading up to the race. The forward is written by Sir Steve Redgrave, who makes a very good point that I think illustrates why the competition is so fierce in this race – in any other race, there’s a silver medalist but in this race, there isn’t. There is no silver medal or second place – you’ve either won the race or you’ve lost it, and that is something that will stick with you for the rest of your life. Those who compete are literally defined in life by whether or not they won against the competing Blue Boat.

The Boys in the Boat

Written by a guy who’s never rowed or been in a boat before, “Boys in the Boat” is about the University of Washington crew that competed at the 1936 Olympics in Berlin, in front of Hitler, and won gold. This was a shock to the world because the rowers that comprised this crew were unlike any other rowers currently competing in the sport, either at home or abroad. Unlike what Washington’s current persona gives off, this is a legit underdog tale that’s intertwined with a lot of fascinating history about the sport and the development of rowing on the west coast.

I’m currently reading this at the same time I’m reading The Amateurs and, as I previously mentioned, The Amateurs talks a lot about how rowing isn’t a big name sport and it’s lucky to get a paragraph written about it in the newspaper. The Boys in the Boat, by stark contrast, talks consistently about how big rowing used to be in the national media – it was comparable to any major sport being played today and got just as much attention as most major sports do now.

The Red Rose Crew

This is one of the (very) few books on rowing that highlights the participation of women in the sport. “The Red Rose Crew” is about the formation of the first women’s crew to compete internationally (at the 1975 World Championships and the 1976 Olympics in Montreal) and talks about the obstacles they had to overcome in the mid-70s right after the passing of Title IX, which is what paved the way for the introduction of women’s rowing. They had to overcome the obvious obstacles of everyone doubting them, including their coach, who didn’t think that women could handle the rigorous amount of training it took to become a competitive crew. That coach, by the way, was Harry Parker.

Blood Over Water

This one is co-authored by two brothers, David and James Livingston, who both competed in the 2003 Boat Race, which if you remember from this video I post in February, was one of the most epic races in the entire history of the race. In addition to that and all the other drama that happened right before the race (of which there was a lot), what made the ’03 race unique was that it was the first one in over a hundred years where brothers were competing – and not just competing together but competing for opposing crews (David studied at Oxford and James was at Cambridge).

Similar to The Last Amateurs, this story begins a year before the race and chronicles each brother’s progression into their respective boats while at the same time focusing on something that is undeniably a central part of the story – the relationship between the two and how it was affected and strained by the pressures of the race. At one point they stop speaking to each other although the media hype made it difficult for them to ignore each other completely. The book itself is broken up into narrative sections, each one narrated by a different brother telling his point of view of what was going on at the time, which helps to give a really well-rounded look at the race and everything leading up to it.

Mind Over Water

Normally I’m not one for anything or anyone that tries to derive life lessons from something or over-analyzes “personal growth” because so often it comes off as trying way too hard, which admittedly at times this one does too, but I kind of just got this one. To understand books like this you have to look past the cliches (of which there are many) and really apply what’s being said to your own life and situation(s). When you do that it’s a lot easier, in my opinion at least, to get the message that the author’s trying to convey.

There are three sections to this book, each one relating a different part of rowing to one’s own life. The first part is about finding your way, the second about balance, and the last one about giving everything you’ve got to achieve the endgame. Several people mentioned in the book are familiar to the Boston scene and were also central figures in the The Amateurs. What I like about this book is that it kind of puts into words the transformation everybody goes through from the time they start as a novice to when they’re a few years into the sport and start to really feel the effect that rowing has had on them, not in a physical way but in a more emotional, developmental way. It’s an oddly personal read, which I think is great because it gives everyone an opportunity to take something different away from it.

I totally died during my seat race today. I usually am awesome at them but today was my worst in a LONG time. But I’m not sure if it was just a bad day or if I have somehow been getting worse at them over the course of the season because I think I might be getting overconfident.

I wouldn’t disagree with you that your seat races might be suffering a little bit from your (over)confidence. Your rowing itself is probably good but where you might be suffering is in the mental game. Confidence is a good thing to have but when you start getting overconfident to the point where you think you can’t lose, you start taking situations for granted.

The thing with seat races is that once they’re over, they’re over. If the outcome isn’t what you wanted, yea you should be pissed but be pissed in a positive way that motivates you to go out the next time and do better. Figure out why you didn’t do as well as you’d hoped – was it something in your control or out of your control? Were you overconfident? Why? How was your rowing? What was your technique like? Were you mentally/physically prepared? If you think that you’re getting overconfident, figure out why and then … tone it down. Be honest and realistic with your expectations, forget about past results, don’t compare yourself to other people (and/or assume you’re better than them based on the boat you/they are in or past results), be open to constructive criticism, and be disciplined but not overly aggressive (with your actions or attitude) towards yourself or your teammates.

My coach always says she values experience, commitment and attitude. I’m one of the more experienced rowers on the team and I’m always trying my hardest to be positive and row my best. I’ve been spending most of the season in the third 8+ even though she’s told me before she thinks I’m really strong and a good rower. She’s put me in this boat for all of our major regattas and when I ask for an explanation, she doesn’t give me a straight answer. I know its supposed to be for pushing the lower boats and such, however, it’s really demoralizing for me because I feel like I’m never given a chance to show my full potential as a member of the team. I’d also really like to win, which my 8+ rarely does, whereas the first and second 8+ s are always taking gold and silver. What do you think I should do?

Hmm. I never really understood how putting a competent rower in a lower boat was supposed to “push” the other rowers but that’s just me. It’s definitely not something I’d ever do. I mean, there’s other reasons why I’d move a rower down but that particular reason isn’t one of them. Have you told her that you find it demoralizing to be put in lower boats when the feedback you’re getting indicates that you have the potential to be in a higher one?

I would try talking to her again and making it abundantly clear how you feel. It’s possible that she’s not giving you a straight answer because you’re not making it known in a clear enough way that this is bothering you. If you beat around the bush and don’t say exactly what you’re thinking/feeling, your coaches aren’t going to know why you’re asking. If they think you’re just asking because you’re pissed you’re in a boat that you deem “lesser” than your skills, they’ll write you off as being whiny. I doubt that’s the case here but it is a possibility. You never know until you ask. Have you asked or has she told you why she thinks having you in this boat pushes them? I know it’s not the most profound piece of advice I’ve ever given but I think the best thing you could do is sit down with her and talk about why you think you deserve at least a shot at the upper boats, what she thinks or had hoped your role in the 3rd 8+ should be, etc. Clear the air on both sides, if that makes sense. There’s probably a lot being lost in limbo right now because no one is asking the right questions.

Until then though and most especially since we’re creeping closer towards the end of the season, commit yourself to the 3rd 8+. The frustration you have for not being in the top boats should not be noticed, sensed, or felt by anyone in the boat you’re currently in because it’s not fair to them. Keep working hard and put all your energy into making the 3rd 8+ as fast as possible. Have a good attitude and try to find something positive about the experience. If you can think of something before you talk to your coach, tell her that – for example (this is completely hypothetical), being in the 3rd 8+ and doing all the technique work you did really helped you to focus on engaging the legs immediately at the catch and having a solid drive instead of disengaging them by shooting your tail and relying solely on your upper body. Epiphanies such as this sometimes cause coaches to reevaluate a rower’s position in the boat, so it’s worth a shot.

Hi! So I have unfortunately not been able to get on the water and row for about a year due to family/medical issues. I can now luckily start again and get back on the water this summer in a non-competive program. I’m just really scared that I forgot what to do and I will be the worst one there. Is there any advice you have for getting back in the swing of things? Sorry for the stupid question, thanks!

This isn’t stupid! I’m actually glad you asked this because I felt the same way when I started coaching last spring and coxing over the summer. I was really worried that after spending such a long time away from the sport that I had forgotten everything I needed to know about rowing. I eased into it with coaching and it was almost like I’d never been away but I was more concerned with coxing because it’s not so much what you say or in my case, remember, but how you say it, your demeanor, etc. What if I didn’t have that “spirit” anymore? I was on pins and needles the whole time we were out and was driving myself nuts trying to think twenty three steps ahead but the first hard burst we did, my long-repressed inner coxswain came out and just like with coaching, it was like I’d never left.

Rowing is like riding a bike. Its the same repetitive motion over and over which makes it impossible to forget how to do. The first time you get on a bike after being off it for awhile might be a little wobbly but it only takes a minute or so before you’re back to impersonating Lance Armstrong. When you get back in the boat, it might look and feel a little rusty but don’t get frustrated by that. You already know it’s going to happen so just accept that and pre-commit yourself to making immediate changes as soon as you hear or feel that something isn’t right. You’ll know what changes need to be made too – that stuff is inherent.

Start visualizing the stroke when you’re just sitting around not doing anything … legs, back, arms, arms, back, legs. Swing into and out of the finish. Get all your body angle by bodies over. Unweight the hands at the catch. Grab the first inch, engage the legs, press. Legs and hands move together. Quick around the turn, get your hands to speed with the boat, and be patient on the recovery. Roll up early so you’re ready for the catch. Inside hand feathers, outside hand applies pressure. Support every stroke with your core. Chins and shoulder stay up, brains and eyes stay focused like a laser. Oh, and don’t forget – be confident. Attitude is everything.

Hi, I was just wondering when you would suggest talking to college coaches? Like, 6 months before you start college? A year? 2 years? I’m a bit lost! Thanks! 🙂

You should start looking at schools when you’re a junior, reaching out probably mid-year to the ones you’re interested in (start by filling out the recruiting questionnaires on the team’s website and follow up with an email introducing yourself), and then beginning to send them regular updates on your progress, race results, etc. starting that spring. Then over the summer if they’re interested in you they’ll reach out to set up an official visit for that fall.
